You are not a slave to the past of your ancestors and you do not have to be a slave to wrong choices you have made in life.
Your past can define you or it can catapult you into your future. It all depends on your mindset. You can never go forward if you are always looking in the rear view mirror. The past is the past because it has passed.
We are all born into lifestyles and situations which we often times can do nothing about. Many of us have made choices that we are not proud of. None of us are immune to the trials of life. But when we choose to remain in the mindset of the past, it is then that we become a victim of the past. It is easy to remain in that familiar place of a victim mentality in our minds. But when we learn and grow from the knowledge of our past and become better rather than bitter it is then that we become a victor rather than a victim.
Changing our mindset is a journey, and at times a down right struggle, but it is oh so worth the ride. Perhaps heartache and hardship are all you have ever known. Or maybe you have come from a good background but the circumstances of life have not been in your favor. You may have made wrong choices and the consequences of those choices have been hard to bear and seem never ending.
Many times it is as if our eyesight has become dim because we have lived in the darkness of a destructive mindset for far too long. But if you will keep pursuing the God who made you then you will find that even though for a time the light at the end of the tunnel may have been blinding to your eyes, just as you have became accustomed to the darkness, you will one day become accustom to the light of God’s word. You will know the truth and the truth will set you free. John 8:32
We all experience times of testing, which is normal for every human being. But God will be faithful to you. He will screen and filter the severity, nature, and timing of every test or trial you face so that you can bear it. And each test is an opportunity to trust him more, for along with every trial God has provided for you a way of escape that will bring you out of it victoriously. 1 Corinthians 10:13.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creature the old things have passed away. Behold, new things have come. 2 Corinthians 5:17.
“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:18-19
It’s your choice, Will you to let your past define you? Or will you let God’s word refine you?
