The Apostle John knew the love of the Father he often referred to himself as the one whom Jesus loved. John is the only disciple we are told about who laid his head upon Jesus’ chest. In doing so, he heard the heart beat of the Father beating for him in the rhythm of love.
Without knowing our Heavenly Father’s love for us, all else is worthless. It is impossible to walk in love if you do not know that you are loved. John knew for certain that he was loved by Jesus. This is why he often spoke of himself in the third person as the disciple whom Jesus loved.
Because John knew without a doubt that he was loved by Jesus, I am inclined to believe that John thus established his created and valued identity as a son of the most high God. Therefore no longer functioning as an orphan on the earth but as an heir with God. John knew and lived by faith that everything that belonged to Jesus the son of God also belonged to him.
“There is more than enough room in my Fathers home. If this were not so I would tell you plainly, because I go to prepare a place for you to rest.” John 14:2
“I tell you this timeless truth: The person who follows me in faith, believing in me, will do the same mighty miracles that I do.” John 14:12
“I will be a true Father to you, and you will be my beloved sons and daughters,” says the Lord 2 Corinthians 6:18
I imagine that John must have gotten on Peters nerves by always referring to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved. I can imagine Peter saying to John “Oh aren’t you special!”
While Peter expressed his love for Jesus, John expressed Jesus’ love for him. By taking the time to be still and know that He was God and laying his head upon Jesus’ chest a new identity was established within John as the disciple that Jesus loved.
Peter is asked three times by Jesus, “Peter do you love me?” Peter replied “Yes Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus then tells Peter “then feed my sheep and follow me” John 21:17-18
Jesus had to remind Peter that His love for Peter would shine through him if Peter could by faith love as Jesus loved by focusing on Jesus’ love for him rather than on his love for Jesus.
As you lay your head upon His chest and listen for His heartbeat, I pray that a new identity will be established in you as the son or daughter of the most high God. For when you come into that place of rest with Him by being still and knowing that He is God, you will no longer need to be reminded to follow Him. Because who you are in the quiet place with Him will shine through in every area of your life.
That doesn’t mean you will not be rejected by others “He was despised and rejected by men.”
Isaiah 53:3 But by faith you will live and move by the grace of God. Because you have laid your head upon His chest and have heard His heart beat in the rhythm of love for you. You will no longer have an orphan mentality but one as the son or daughter of God that you are.
