May the words of my mouth
and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight, LORD
my Rock and my Redeemer.
When David (as a boy) went out to fight Goliath, Saul gave David his own armor, which David tried on. But Saul’s armor didn’t fit him, so he refused to wear it. 1 Samuel 17: 12-58 I believe there are several reasons why Saul’s armor did not fit David. But the one that recently stood out to me, is that David was already wearing the armor of God. Another armor would have been much too confining!!
We are told to, Be strong in the Lord and His mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Ephesians 6: 10-13 (NLT)
But what is the full armor of God?
The belt of truth:
Jesus said, “I am the way the truth and the life” John 14:6
The breast plate of righteousness:
The Lord is righteous in everything He does. Psalm 145:17
The shoes of peace:
He will keep in perfect peace all who trust in Him. Isaiah 26:3
The shield of faith:
Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word God. Romans 10:17
The helmet of salvation:
For God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
The sword of the spirit:
For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword. Hebrews 4:12
I believe that what God is saying to us when He says put on the whole armor of God, is “Come up a little higher. Come closer to me, for it is in me that your protection lies.” When we truly look at what the armor of God is, does it not paint a picture of who Christ is? The more time you spend with someone, the better you get to know them, sometimes even taking on their characteristics. Should we not desire to become more like Christ, and represent Him to the world for who He is?
We are not to be entangled with fear. But we are to know whose provision we operate under, and that He always provides what we need, when we need it. God is calling you to come up a little higher, to draw closer to Him. We need to be at peace in the journey, because He has already gone ahead of us. For He leads his sheep; He isn’t behind them driving them like cattle. Before the words were ever spoken from your mouth, angels were already being disbursed to accomplish that which he has planned. The full armor of God comes upon us when we praise Him. Praise Him in the journey for His protection is already upon you.
